The transits are one of the more complex calculations and interpretations made on a numerological chart. They are calculated from the letters of your first, middle, and last name, and they represent subtle internal changes and influence from year to year. Some numerologists don’t fuss with the transits at all, but they are a major feature of the numerological chart, and we think that it’s best to understand and be comfortable with them, as they can create added insight for you or your clients.
Overview of the Transits
When we’re talking about the transits, we’re actually talking about three different cycles:
- The Physical Transit (Derived from the letters of your first name)
- The Mental Transit (Derived from the letters of your middle name)
- The Spiritual Transit (Derived from the letters of your last name)
If you or your client don’t have a middle name, the last name is used to calculate both the mental and spiritual transits.
We experience life in some way in all three of these domains, even if the divisions aren’t quite as clear-cut as we’d like them to be. Oftentimes, the mental and spiritual seem to fuse together into one, just like the physical and mental seem to be engaged in this constant game of tug-of-war.
Calculating the Transits
Calculating the transits is complex not because it’s necessarily difficult, but because it can be one of the more time-consuming calculations you’ll make. It helps if you use a template or chart, like the one we provide in our Numerology Ace Professional Reading Template, or if you use a numerology software like VeBest Radiant Guide to calculate the transits for you. You can also use a dedicated transit calculator, such as the one offered here by Affinity Numerology.
But we believe it’s important (even if you’re going to use a calculator or software) that you know how to calculate the transits.
The transits are based on the letters of your first, middle, and last name, and each letter lasts for its numeric value in years. So the transit of the letter A lasts for one year, while the letter M lasts for four years.
So to calculate the transits, we start at age 0, and we write out the letters from each name, respectively. It’s important to know that the transits (and essence) last from birth day to birth day, unlike the personal year and pinnacle cycles. Take a look at the early year transits for our fictional client, Ronald Steven McDonald.

As you can see, there’s quite a bit of information here, so let’s break it down row-by-row:
- The top row represents the age of you or your client. Remember this goes from birth day to birth day, and so the first year covers your birth to your first birthday.
- The second row represents the calendar year. Ronald was born in 1990, so the first calendar year for him is displayed as 90.
- The third row is the physical transit. As mentioned, it is derived from the first name, with each letter lasting for as many years as its numeric value. Thus, the R from Ronald lasts for 9 years, 0-8.
- The fourth row is the mental transit, based off of Ronald’s middle name, Steven.
- The fifth row is the spiritual transit, based off of Ronald’s last name, McDonald.
- The sixth and seventh row both represent the essence, which is the numeric total of the physical, mental and spiritual transits, representing the combined influence of the transits on Ronald’s interior life. It is expressed as a double-digit number in the sixth row, and as a single-digit number in the seventh row.
You can see how this could be time-consuming. (That’s why I prefer to use a software/calculator for this particular calculation.)
Interpreting the Transits
Much like other numbers, we can interpret the transits using the general meanings of the single-digit numbers that the letters represent. It’s important to note though, we need to be careful not to oversimplify things in these cycles. As the transits and essence need to be interpreted in conjunction with the other cycles, such as personal years, pinnacles and challenges. These numbers and letters do not stand alone. You can reference the meanings of the single-digit numbers here.
